Terry's Poem

The bug wasn't really all that hard to fix
for a programming genius's programming tricks.
The revisions were tested, the patches applied,
the issue resolved and the boss satisfied.

But... the bug came back the very next day.
The bug came back, he thought it was a goner but
the bug came back, it just couldn't stay away.

Now, a bug that comes back is not regular work.
It's called a 'regression' and means you're a jerk.
Your bubblegum hack was too fragile to last
and everyone's glad that at least it broke fast.

So it got fixed again with the greatest of care,
every special case tested three times to see where
little things that would normally just get reported
would show up so that they'd be quickly aborted.

But the bug came back the very next day.
The bug came back, he thought it was a goner but
the bug came back, it just couldn't stay away.

This was getting insane? How the hell could this be?
Here's the line where I fixed it! Just look at it, see?
if (fT = 0) ... okay... nevermind.
I'll stay late to fix it, I won't get behind.

But the bug came back the very next day.
The bug came back, he thought it was a goner but
the bug came back, it just couldn't stay away.

"I'll rewrite the whole feature, redo every line.
It'll take the whole weekend, but things will be fine.
Oh, (Bleep) it, forget it. I quit, go to hell."
and his desperate mutter grew into a yell.

"Just DIE! you computer, DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE!
DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE!"
A fist through the monitor, foot through the table...
and the bug's reassigned to someone who's more stable.

But the bug came back the very next day.
The bug came back, he thought it was a goner but
the bug came back, it just couldn't stay away.
